Weight Loss
At Jackson Medical Specialists, we focus on the medical management of weight loss, treating overweight and obesity as medical conditions rather than behavioral failures. This means we believe there is much more to your weight than your habits, such as biology, comorbid conditions, medications, environment, and genetics. So many factors can contribute to weight challenges—not merely lifestyle or willpower. Yet, the vast majority of the weight loss industry is focused solely on behavior changes for weight loss, despite proven research that shows poor success with that approach. They often leave you feeling like your weight status is due to an inability to control eating or laziness, or both. This is not true! Research shows that on average there is only about 5-7% weight lost with behavior changes, and it often ends up with weight regain and/or weight cycling, frustration, stigma, and ultimately long-term poor health outcomes. Jackson Medical Specialists takes a fresh approach to an old problem: overweight and obesity are medical conditions that warrant medications for management. We apply scientific, research-backed methods, including medication, to support long-term health outcomes, as opposed to standard behavior-only models. Our model breaks the systems that have left you with frustration and weight cycling and gives you long-lasting weight loss and improved healthy you’ve been longing for!
We take a medical approach to your weight loss, which means we will start with a medical history and blood work. This will identify possible reasons for weight gain, such as a thyroid problem or male/ female hormone imbalances, and also clarify if there are any medication choices that won't be right for you. The medication chosen for your weight loss program will be based on your eating habits (i.e. are you a carb lover or a meat eater), your eating patterns (i.e. are you an all-day-snacker or dinnertime heavy loader), and medical indications and contraindications (i.e. we'll avoid stimulants in cases of heart conditions/ arrhythmias). The frequency and duration of your weight loss program will be decided together and will depend on how aggressive you want to be with the approach and your weight loss goals.
We do not require a referral from your primary care provider to be seen.
You do not need medical insurance to be seen. If you do have insurance, it should cover your lab work. Most insurance companies are not covering weight loss medications, but some do. If you'd like to use your insurance, check with your insurance company first to find out if they cover weight loss medication. If they do, we will honor that! You can also pay for all services using your FSA or HSA!
